Why do people always associate Government staffs with corruption, laziness and rudeness?
Below are some of the experiences that I had with some of the government bodies staff :
1. I went to pay some fees at my 'previous' university counter. The clock showed 3.45 pm, however there was no people at the counter! I tried to peer into the office through the counter's payment slot. There were some staffs inside, and some of them were aware that I was standing at the counter. However, no one acknowledged the fact that I was standing there, jumping up and down to grab their attention.
At 4.00 pm, one mak cik came to the counter and coldly said to me, "We are already closed".
"But, it is just 4.00 o'clock and the notice said counter closed at 4.30", I said.
"No, we close the counter at 4.00 and 4.30 we all go home. Oome tomorrow, earlier", she said.
"Please lah, this time only. Next time, I come earlier. Besides, I am staying outside of the hostel", I tried to plead.
"Ok lah. Lain kali, kami tak terima dah. "
2. This one happened right after I finished my university studies. Since my grades are just average, my mum advised me to get SPA8 form. My mum and me went up to the office, and saw that there are no one in the office! We rang the bell on the counter, and after about the umpteenth time(around 7 minutes later), a guy came out from a door located to the right of us and scold us for being so noisy!
3. My father was an ex Custom Officer. I think, he tried quite hard to work as honest as possible. But, he always got some presents from 'his' friends. A few dozens of mandarin orange crates during the Chinese New Year from a trader, hampers from others, a few boxes of imported expensive chocolates, some baskets of imported fruits, imported jeans. Never money though. Well, not that I know of lah.
Well, lately I do see that there are some changes in the attitude of the government staffs. This is due directly to the attention given by our Prime Minister, Y.A.B Tan Sri Abdullah Badawi. Most of the cabinet members now have sterling reputation. Services that previously took such a long time to process (eg : ic and passport creation or modification) now takes faster time to finished.
Hurrah for the new PM.
Only now, can somebody look into the issue where it took a very long time for the hospital to process patients? and also distributing medicines? Come on lah, we always have to wait 2-3 hours just to see the doctor and then another 2-3 hours to wait for the medicines at the General Hospital.
Am reading Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz.
